First when you get to Alduran's Gate you need to set up your forge,
some basic items you get for free, but also you can buy some additional, like table, bed, shelf etc.
Green squares shows you that nothing is blocking this position, if you place it and don't like current location, you can pick it up again by using a crowbar.
The shelves give you the chance to place whatever you want on them.
