Well, well, well, here we are again, Keepers.
Can you guys believe that we’re like 3 months away from 2027????? At this point, we feel like time no longer flies; it’s practically teleporting from one year to another in a blink of an eye, no?
With that aside, we think this last quarter will be a very busy one (maybe even the busiest), with many great games releasing SO soon, including the new Castlevania, Phantom Blade Zero, The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time, and we hope you’re excited to be a maling mobil (a.k.a. car thief ) if you have pre-ordered ✨THE✨ GTA VI. RIP wallet :( But we hope things are going well for everyone, even if it’s just a few things at a time. Also, let us know which one you guys are considering buying!
Sooo, anyway, let’s get back on track talking about DreadOut 3. You know, we’re currently still cooking the gameplay in DreadOut 3, it’s in the works. We saw some of you asking if there would be a combat mechanic like the one we have in DreadOut 2. Well, let’s dig into it.
In this third one, we kind of want to give players more freedom in how they explore the world, but not in the sense that the game would be an open world, of course. That’s why the game adopts a non-linear survival horror approach. Certain areas can be explored in different sequences, and not everything you discover will immediately lead you to the next objective, while others might draw you right toward something you didn’t expect.
However, exploration in DreadOut is not only about finding your way round and finishing the game. As a Keeper of the Dark, Linda now shares a much closer bond with the supernatural realm. She can communicate with spirits and traverse the thin boundary between the human world and the spirit world. Sometimes she does this intentionally, and other times, the other world comes to her. As the veil between these two worlds grew thinner, Linda’s ability to perceive things invisible to ordinary humans became a crucial part of the gameplay. This is when the IrisPhone comes back into play.
Linda’s camera is more than just a tool for confronting ghosts. In DreadOut 3, the IrisPhone serves as a primary means of understanding your surroundings. You can switch between third-person and first-person perspectives as usual, using the camera to observe, photograph, and uncover hidden elements.

One of the first signs that something is near Linda is Supernatural Pulse. When a dangerous spirit is close by, Linda’s flashlight begins to flicker. It means the environment itself offers a warning before you even lay eyes on the entity. Just like the vignette in the first DreadOut as well as Linda’s bracelet in the second series. Too bad that Steam news can't seem to contain mp4 file or GIF :(( (but the flashlight was actually pulsing).

But then what if that something is deliberately hiding in plain sight? Well, this is where you’ll need Spectral Flash. Linda can unleash a burst of energy to reveal entities lurking nearby.
And with the Lens of Truth, you can use the IrisPhone camera in first-person mode to photograph ghosts and discover hidden paths or objects that are invisible to the naked eye.

The abilities also play a key role in the Paranormal Investigation you and Linda will be doing.

When exploring an area, you can observe your surroundings and use the camera to search for clues and spiritual traces left behind. So, the answer we need isn't always found at the next objective marker. You might need to pay attention to the places you go through, aim your camera at something that looks off, or snap a photo to reveal what's hidden there.

And of course, not everything you discover is meant merely for observation. In certain situations, Linda can use her phone to seal the spirit.

After dealing enough damage to an enemy, you can draw ancient glyphs we called sigils, directly onto the camera screen to trap and seal it away as your finishing move.
All these mechanics stem altogether from a single premise: Linda's way to perceive and interact with supernatural beings and their world has changed. And in DreadOut 3, the truth hides in the flickers of light, the photographs, in the symbols. Alright, that’s all for now.
We’ll talk about the gameplay more as we progress even further into development, ok! If you haven't already, hit a follow on our page and see you next log!
