Combat mechanics

The systems behind every fight — drawn from attributed community guides. Master these before the next boss.

Stance and Posture Break

Enemy posture is not visible, but high-posture-damage attacks can stagger, stun, or knock enemies down. Breaking posture opens enemies up for Critical Hits, giving you big damage and more predictable punish windows.

Critical Hits

Critical Hits can happen after you open an enemy up through posture damage, and they are described as one of the easiest mechanics to abuse in Elden Ring. Some gear rewards them directly, such as a talisman that heals you every time you land a Critical Hit.

Guard Counter

In PvE, guard counters are excellent, especially in boss fights. Block the last hit of an enemy’s attack chain, then retaliate with a guard counter to deal gigantic posture damage and quickly knock enemies down.

Blocking

A good shield can let you stay aggressive by safely punishing attacks you know you can block. The excerpts describe blocking predictable moves, then using guard counters, while also warning that some fights require deciding whether to dodge, block, sprint away, or punish.

Charged Heavy Attacks

Fully charged R2 attacks are very strong in PvE because they can quickly stun or posture break enemies. Some fights can be simplified into a rhythm of dodge, charged R2, dodge, charged R2, then Critical Hit.

Jump Attacks

Jump attacks deal additional posture damage, making them useful when you need a faster option than a charged R2. They are especially recommended against fast bosses, and some stomp shockwaves can be jumped over before attacking on the way down.

Two-Handing

Two-handing increases Strength, which can reduce stat requirements and let you use heavier weapons earlier. The excerpts also note that two-handing can increase stance damage, making it valuable for Strength-focused setups.

Poise

Poise is tied to armor, with heavier armor naturally providing more of it. The Vagabond’s armor is praised for strong damage negation and poise among starter kits, while many armor discussions compare weight against poise value.

Equip Load and Medium Roll

Staying under 70% equip load lets you medium roll, while carrying too much can make you heavy-roll. The Vagabond starts with both a longsword and halberd, and the guide specifically warns to unequip one early to avoid heavy-rolling.

Baiting and Punishing

You do not need to dodge-roll every attack; sometimes you can hover near the edge of an enemy’s range and bait attacks that miss. Once the enemy commits, back off, wait for the opening, then punish with the right response.
