Hi everyone! 💚
This is the last of our four dragons, and the one we've been quietest about. You've met the water dragon, the fire dragon and the earth dragon — here's how the electric one came together, from the first color tests to the model that's now standing in the engine next to his siblings.

1. First Concepts ✏️
Every dragon starts from his element, and the element sets the silhouette, the palette and the personality all at once. Electricity was quite tricky to pin down, because lightning is a shape more than a color — so we tested a lot of both.
First a wide pass on palettes and glow, all with the same question underneath: which combination reads as "electric" without turning him into a warning sign?

Then we tried making the lightning part of his anatomy instead of an effect stuck on top — crests, wings and tails shaped like arcs, bolts and sparks.

2. The Illustration That Decided His Character ⚡
Somewhere in the middle of that search, our artist painted this: a small dragon standing alone in a clearing while lightning comes down around him.

Up to then we'd been designing a fast, flashy, energetic dragon, because that's the obvious read on electricity. But the painting suggested something much more interesting: what if the storm isn't him? What if he's a small creature who happens to carry something loud and a little frightening, and he's the first one who has to live with it?

3. Making Him Skittish (But Not Sad) 😟
So we went back to the poses with a new goal — a dragon who is genuinely nervous. Head low, weight on the hind legs, always half a step from bolting.

The hard part was the line we couldn't cross. Dragon Shelter is a cozy game about restoring friendship between people and dragons, so an anxious dragon shouldn’t be a sad dragon or making you feel like you're doing something wrong.
The answer was to make the wariness temporary and the warmth permanent. He's the one dragon who doesn't open up to you straight away — he startles, he keeps his distance, he watches you for a while. But once he decides you're safe, he's the most attached of the four, and the hardest to talk into letting you out of his sight.
4. Choosing the Design 🎨
With the personality settled, the visual finally clicked. A soft mint-green body — cool, quiet, ordinary — with the whole electric side of him concentrated in a warm amber glow: a bright crest along his neck, translucent moth-like wings with lightning running through the veins, and a tail that ends in a curl of pure light.

We like this split a lot. When he's calm he's a small green creature with a lamp on his back. When he's startled, the warm parts flare — and that comes from his design rather than from an effect we bolt on.

Then his face. Big amber eyes set slightly too wide, a small mouth, and a permanent worried little brow that does most of the emotional work.

5. Modelling & Texturing 🐉
Next the concept becomes a 3D model. The main job here is keeping the shape readable from the game camera, since you'll mostly see him from above and at a distance — which is exactly why the crest and the wings had to be the loudest thing on him.

Then the hand-painted textures. Dragon Shelter is hand-painted 3D, so everything is painted rather than photo-based, and that's what keeps him looking like the concept art once he's in the engine.

And the test that matters most — putting more live to him with animations. Same proportions, same eyes, same silhouette language, but a completely different feel.

6. Lightning Effects 🌩️
Then the VFX. Lightning is a fun problem in a cozy game, because real lightning is instant, harsh and scary, and none of those words are allowed here. So ours is slower, softer, warmer and rounder than the real thing.

The rule we set for all four dragons applies to him too: the cast and the hit can be bright and loud, but whatever lingers has to be quiet. A farm covered in permanent sparks stops feeling like a farm.

7. Coming to the Farm 🌾
Electric dragon is the last one you'll meet, and he arrives when your farm is already running — which is the whole point of putting the shy one at the end. By then you've earned three dragons' trust and you know what you're doing. He's the one who makes you slow down and do it gently.
