Giddy up, Explorers 🤠 Core Keeper’s 1.3 Update, Riders of the Underground, is coming on September 21st! We’re so excited to be bringing you an update with a whole host of new features and content that you’ll be able to enjoy across all stages of your underground adventure. From all-new ways to traverse the underground on rideable mounts, to a new sub-biome and improvements to the Mage & Summoner play styles, we’re ready to share some (but not all!) of what you’ve got to look forward to.

Rideable Mounts

You asked for it, and we delivered! Introducing rideable mounts, a new and adorable way to travel in Core Keeper. From 1.3, every single type of cattle in the game will now be rideable thanks to the introduction of the Saddle. All you have to do is approach your desired mount with the Saddle in hand, place it on the cattle, and then ride off into the sunset (that last part is optional). This exciting new feature also comes with its very own UI where you can change your mount’s name and adjust its behaviour to decide whether it stays in place, roams freely, or follows you around when you’re not riding it. Of course, you can also remove the Saddle entirely and return your mount to its former “cattle” status!

Moss Sub-Biome

In the darker, more humid corners of the Forgotten Ruins, a new sub-biome emerges. Welcome to the Moss sub-biome – a collection of, surprisingly lush, patches of greenery that can be found dotted all over these stoney ruins. With a cozy atmosphere and no natural predators, the Moss sub-biome provides a respite from the destructive Caveling activity in the Forgotten Ruins…though that isn’t to say the odd Caveling doesn’t wander in from time to time.

This peaceful sub-biome also brings with it a new breed of cattle in the form of the raptor-like Orex! Orexes might have all the hallmarks of a vicious predator (front-facing eyes, sharp teeth, powerful jaws), but their diet is entirely critter based and they are typically quite placid in nature.

Mage & Summoner Improvements

We’ve been listening to your feedback on Core Keeper’s magic system and have made some adjustments to improve the Mage & Summoner play styles. This includes rebalancing and restructuring some of the talents in the Magic and Summoning skill trees, along with the addition of a new weapon type for Summoners and new staff weapons for Mages. The way summons are spawned and persist has also been improved, but we’ll let you experiment with this on your own. We can’t wait to hear your feedback once you’ve tried it out! ✨

Hookshot

The eagle-eyed among you might have spotted the Hookshot being teased in one or two of our posts on social media recently. This new off-hand item enables Explorers to cross the many pits that run through the underground; provided it has something to hook onto, of course. While the Hookshot might not entirely remove the need for bridges, it's a great (and speedy!) way to jump over small chasms, allowing you to explore further afield and look incredibly cool while doing so.

New Pets

We’re bringing not one, not two, but THREE new pets to 1.3! The Hoppet is a friend from the sea who keeps enemies at bay with ranged attacks that have the potential to apply the slippery effect. Azeos Jr is a friend from the skies who fires projectile shards and has the ability to stun your enemies. There’s more to discover about these cute creatures, including their various colour combinations, but we’ll leave that up to you!

Wait, you’ve only told us about two of the new pets…” we hear you say! Well, we’re keeping the third a surprise for now. All we can say is that we hope you love this little pal as much as we do! 😉

And MORE!

We’re adding 10 new armour pieces, 15 new rings, 15 new necklaces, new pouches, new enemies, and new weapons! We’re giving you the option to customise your cursor and crosshair indicators and making paintbrush areas re-sizeable, along with a bunch of balancing adjustments in an effort to improve the overall gameplay experience.

In our quest to make travel and transport more enjoyable, boats, mine carts, and go-karts will now go to your inventory if you die while riding them, and we’ve made some improvements to the go-kart handbrake, turning, and inertia for smoother rides. Players can also expect a bunch of quality-of-life improvements including a new key bind to cycle through loadouts and the ability to compare gear…we know how much you love to optimize your builds!

As always, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and you’ll be able to see exactly what’s been added in our patch notes when the update launches! For the time being, we want to thank you for your support while we’ve worked on 1.3 and to remind you that this is just the first stop on the Road to the Maw. We’re looking forward to hearing your feedback and can’t wait to bring you even more!
