Major Update v0.8.20

Production Reworked, Relic Traders and New Foundations

There is a point in development where an update stops being just a collection of new features and starts changing what future updates can become.

For us, v0.8.20 is one of those updates.

We have worked extremely hard over the past weeks to make this release rich in new content, but also to rebuild some of the systems underneath Plains of Pain so we can take much bigger steps soon.

Some days were spent creating things you immediately see. New traders, items, weapons, characters, locations.

Other days disappeared into worker logic, production queues, UI, world generation, loot tables, settlement resources, and all those invisible gears that make the wasteland actually work.

Both matter.

Because the world we want to build cannot just look alive.

It needs to work like one.

And this update brings us another big step closer.

Plains of Pain: From Nothing to Power | Gameplay Trailer

About This Trailer

This trailer follows one possible journey through Plains of Pain, from starting with almost nothing to building, trading, producing, travelling and eventually taking on some of the most dangerous threats in the wasteland.

The gameplay was captured directly in-game during live sandbox sessions.

There were no carefully staged encounters waiting for the camera. We entered the world, started recording and followed whatever happened around us, a little like a wildlife cameraman stepping into the wilderness and hoping something interesting happens before something interesting eats him.

What you see is the sandbox doing what it does best: creating situations, encounters and small stories on its own.

Original narration by Paul Green

Every survivor finds a different path.

This one was ours.

Important: New World Required

To access the new v0.8.20 content and features, you must create a new game world after updating.

Existing worlds will not include the newly generated content.

Main Highlight

Production Buildings Reworked

We have completely reworked the Production System, including a new UI and much more precise control over how production works.

Production buildings now use workers directly from the settlement population available in the Grandshack.

Different production buildings require different numbers of workers.

For example:

This means settlement population now becomes an important resource of its own.

You need to think about how many people your settlement can support and how many workers you want to dedicate to production.

More population gives you a larger workforce.

But more people also consume more food and water.

The settlement has to survive before it can produce.

This production rework is also an important foundation for the future Settlements 2.0 update, which we will talk about more when the time is right.

Worker Distribution and Production Priority

The new system also includes automatic worker distribution and production priority.

For example, imagine your settlement currently has 4 out of 15 population, which means you have 4 available workers.

You prepare an Metal Production Shack queue that requires all 4 workers, while another production building requiring only 2 workers is also ready.

The system will automatically assign the available workforce, finish the active production queue, and then redistribute those workers to the next production building ready to operate.

Workers now move between available production tasks depending on what the settlement currently needs and what is ready to be produced.

This gives us much better control over the entire production layer while keeping the system manageable for the player.

Grandshack Rework

The Settlement Grandshack has also received a new UI and updated population management.

As your population grows, its resource requirements gradually increase.

Food and water are consumed over time, and if the settlement can no longer sustain its population, the workforce will stop operating properly.

So growing a settlement is no longer only about reaching the highest population number possible.

Every additional survivor means:

More workers.

More production potential.

And more mouths to feed.

This new foundation is very important for where settlements are heading next.

New Content Layer

Relic Traders

Some things in the wasteland should not be marked conveniently on your map.

Some things should be found.

We are introducing Relic Traders, a completely new type of trader scattered randomly throughout the wasteland.

These characters are looking for extremely rare and unique relics.

Bring them what they seek, and they can exchange those relics for:

Unlike regular traders, Relic Traders cannot be located through maps.

You have to discover them naturally while exploring the world.

The first two are:

Professor Amos

Dustborns Relic Trader

Captain Graves

OGD Relic Trader

This is only the introduction of this content layer.

With upcoming updates, we want to regularly introduce more Relic Traders, more relics, and more unique rewards.

Eventually, we want to connect these characters and discoveries with special quest lines and larger progression paths.

The wasteland should reward the survivor who wonders what might be hiding beyond the next ridge.

New Playable Character - Sgt. Reg

Meet Sgt. Reg, an old army veteran who has already survived more bad days than most wastelanders will ever see.

Age slowed down the calendar.

It did not slow down Reg.

He knows how to survive, knows when to fight, and still has enough military instinct left to remind younger survivors why some old soldiers are very difficult to bury.

Sgt. Reg is now available as a playable character.

New Resource Gathering Additions

Resource gathering continues to expand with several new items:

The Rusty Axe can also be used as a melee weapon.

Choppable trees across the world have now been configured to work with the Rusty Axe, introducing another step toward deeper gathering and material processing.

New Melee Weapons

Two new improvised wasteland weapons have arrived:

Civilization gave us factories.

The wasteland gives us nails and whatever happens to be lying nearby.

Quality of Life Improvements

Farming Visual Improvement

We also improved farming by adding new 3D growth models for plants.

This means players can now visually see the growth progress of their crops just by looking at them. For example, a tomato plant will now clearly show its current growth stage, making it much easier to recognize whether it is still growing or getting close to harvest.

This change makes farming feel more immersive, more readable, and more natural, because you no longer need to rely only on menus or guesses to understand how your crops are doing.

Vehicles

Tree Chopping

Wood gathering is now becoming a proper part of the resource chain and gives us more room to expand this system further.

Patch Notes

World Locations

Base Building

Systems

New Production System

World Generator

Locations are now placed only inside valid biomes.

For example, Fat Mike Junkyard will no longer appear inside Deadwoods.

This gives us more precise control over world generation and helps locations feel more naturally connected to their surrounding environment.

What Is Next

After releasing v0.8.20, our first priority will be watching you play it.

Production has changed significantly, settlement population now matters more, and Relic Traders introduce another completely new progression layer.

We want to gather as much feedback as possible, observe how these systems behave outside our own testing, and make balancing changes or fixes where needed.

This is something we value enormously.

We have our own development path, but the game is being played by thousands of different minds who will always find approaches, combinations, problems, and ideas that we could never reproduce alone.

So we will be watching, listening, tweaking, and improving together with you.

And beyond that, some very large tasks are waiting.

Settlements 2.0.

Outposts 2.0.

And more.

Next week, we want to publish a new Dev Blog and talk properly about where those systems are heading.

Thank You

Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

The community keeps growing, the feedback keeps coming, and every update gives us more motivation to keep improving Plains of Pain step by step.

We are grateful for the support, the discussions, the reports, and all the positivity you continue to bring around the game. It helps us stay focused, improve faster, and keep shaping the wasteland in the right direction.

If you enjoy v0.8.20 and the way Plains of Pain keeps evolving, leaving a Steam review is one of the best ways to help more survivors discover the game and join the community ❤️

We are building this world together.

And remember

This is just the beginning.
