What are The Viking Sagas?
"With God as my witness, I swear these three things: first, to gain followers and make a name for myself; second, to recapture the throne of Norway; and lastly, to do what my brother failed to do—and unify the kingdoms of Norway, Denmark, and England into one great Viking empire."
The Viking Sagas is a DLC set in Northern Europe primarily during the Viking Age. Masters of warfare on land and at sea, the Danes, Saxons, and Varangians offer Age of Empires II players the game’s core unit roster along with several unique and region-specific assets representing iconic features of each region. Veterans and newcomers alike will enjoy approachable, powerful, and immersive new civilizations!
As the sun sets on the Viking age, Harald Hardrada, embarks on an odyssey to become the greatest Viking there ever was. Sail the dramatic fjords of Scandinavia, fight your way through the streets of magnificent Constantinople, and seize the throne of England in the decisive year 1066! Forge bonds of brotherhood with the stoic Christian Ulf Ospaksson and passionate pagan Halldor Snorrason; throw your axe against hordes of fierce enemies; and prove yourself worthy of beautiful Ellisif, the princess of Kyiv.

3 New Civilizations!
- Danes – Sail swift longships to raid and pillage your enemies’ lands to your heart’s content! The Danish unique unit is the Jomsviking, a nimble and hardy infantryman that hurls a torch when attacking enemy buildings and ships.
- Saxons – Construct mighty fortified towns and unify England in the face of ruthless Scandinavian invasions. The Saxon unique unit is the Hearth Troop, a heavy infantryman that hurls a javelin before engaging in melee combat.
- Varangians – Fearlessly navigate Europe’s waterways, ride down your foes, and enlist as mercenaries to wealthy empires! The Varangian unique unit is the Jarl, an axe-hurling cavalryman that shreds enemy infantry.
Immersive and Region-Specific Assets
Several region-specific assets for increased immersion in Northern European history:
- Varangian Guards — deadly shock infantry who generate gold while fighting and excel at raiding and melee combat. Varangian Guards serve the Byzantines, Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings.
- Mounted Crossbowmen — hard-hitting but slow-firing ranged soldiers who strike fear into infantry armies. Available to the Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings, as well as most European civilizations.
- Longships — swift warships that combine potency and versatility. The Danes, Saxons, Varangians, and Vikings can all construct Longships.

- Book I: The Exiled Prince (Varangians) — After being forced into exile, the young Prince Harald of Norway swears to reclaim his kingdom. Can he earn enough wealth, fame, and power on his adventures in the east to realize his dream?
The siege of Hedeby’s fortress in Denmark
- Book II: The Hard Ruler (Danes) — Harald returns to Norway to reclaim his kingdom, but is challenged at every turn by rival Viking rulers. Will he be able to unify the thrones of Norway and Denmark?
The Saxons are defending the city of Scarborough, in northern England, against the Viking assaults.
- Book III: The Last Vikings (Saxons) — The King of England is dead. Harald Hardrada claims its throne in the greatest gamble of his life. Can he conquer the Saxon kingdom and finally build the Viking empire of his dreams?
As you venture through this campaign, you will:
