The story of its recovery and rise to new heights is often cited as an example of fortune’s unpredictable wheel. Chance, however, played little part: behind the dramatic change was a canny and ambitious young heiress, who led a bold reorganization of the House’s monolithic glassworks into smaller, more agile units, each one staffed with sharp and motivated alchemical engineers unencumbered by tradition or rank.
